Lakulisa Temple

Overview

Lakulisa Temple is located at Bhadami in Bhagalkot District of Karnataka. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lakulisa was considered the last avatar of Lord Shiva. He was one of the earliest teachers of Pasupata Philosophy.

About The Temple

This temple is situated to the north - west corner of the Butanatha group. It is noteworthy on account of an interesting nude image of Lakulisa set in the shrine being the principal object of worship. The idol has two hands of which the left resting on the thigh is damaged, and the right, bent at elbow, holds what looks like the end of a staff. The head has wig and tufts of hair are seen falling on the back.

The temple faces south and consists of a sabhamandapa (hall) supported by four pillars and a shrine with a passage around it. Images of Mahishasuramardhini, Ganapathy and Vishnu are carved on the surface of the inner wall of the passage. Two courses of a damaged stepped pyramid type sikhara (tower) are seen over the shrine. The temple can be attributed to 11th to 12th century A.D. on stylistic point of view.
