The Thuravoor Purandareswarath Sree Mahadevar Kshethram is located in Cherrthala, and is dedicated to God Shiva and God Vishnu. The incarnation of God Shiva at Purandareswarath Shree Mahadeva temple is believed to be a form of Sarabha Murthy. The incarnation of God Sarabha is the mellowed form of God Vishnu’s ominous form of the breast-bursting, blood-sucking Narasimha. He is the heavenly deliverer of mental bliss. Praying to him can make anyone “calm of mind, all passion spent”. So, the Purandareswarath Shree Mahadeva Temple has a primordial relation to the legendary Narasimhamoorthy temple, Thuravoor. As the Mammiyoor Shiva Temple is to Guruvayoor, Shree Krishna Temple, so is the Purandareswarath Maha Deva temple to Thuravoor Narasimhamoorthy Temple. Of these different deities that are seen ‘ceremonially arriving’ at Thuravoor on Diwali day for the ritualistic ensemble called “kootti ezhunnellath”, God Purandareswara is the lone Shiva deity among the other deities. Every devotee who goes to Thuravoor Mahakshethram is supposed to go to Purandareswaram Kshethram also, as the ritual goes. Legend has it that a holy Brahmin bound for Vaikom in order to participate in the "Vaikathashtami" and to have “Ashtami Darshan”, could reach only up to Purandareswarath. Heartbroken at the thought of his failure to reach Vaikom in time and to have Ashtami darshan, he cried and prayed to God Shiva in penitence. God Shiva heard his passionate prayer and emerged before him in all his charismatic grace. Later the grace of God Shiva was identified by Sri. Vilvamangalathu Swamiyar, the seer and the saint of ancient Kerala and he enshrined it in the round-shaped abode of the temple.
