The Thiruvannikaaval temple is located in Thiruvanaikoil and is dedicated to Goddess Akilandeshwari. temple is one among the Panchabhoota Stalams (signifying the 5 natural elements) and represents the element water ('Neer'). Since this temple represents water this is also called as 'Appu sthalam' and the Shivalinga is referred to as 'Appu Linga'. One can see water oozing out near the Shivalinga idol in the temple. The Goddess in this temple is 'Akilandeswari' and is also called as Akilandanyaki. The temple is spread across 18 acres with high gopurams, 5 prakarams (corridors) and ornate mandapams. The second and third prakarams were built in the 13th century. The dwajasthampa mandapam contains instances of grand sculptural work. There is also an image of Ekapada Trimurthy representing the trinity of Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in this temple. The Akhilandeswari shrine is situated in the fourth prakaram. The Eastern tower with seven levels has fine sculptures of scenes depicting music, whereas the Western tower has nine levels.
