The Surkhandha Devi temple at Tehri was built on the place where the head of Sati fell as Shiva carried her body on his way to Kailash. Legend has it that Sati, the wife of Siva, gave her life up during a yajna done by her father. Siva was carrying her dead body back to Kailash and he passed through this place on his way. Her head is said to have fallen at the spot where the temple of Surkhanda Devi now stands.
