About The Temple
Only one time puja is followed in this temple. There are shrines for Nandheeswarar, Lords Vinayaka, Muruga with Valli and Deivanai, Mahavishnu, Dakshinamurthy, Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi, Saint Tirugnana Sambandar and Sun God in the prakara.
This theertham was created by Varuna the God of Rain and hence known as Varuna Theertham. Due to lack of proper maintenance, the place is now dense with Karuvela trees. This is a very sacred spring. A dip in this spring is believed to bring the benefits of dips from all the sacred springs of the country. As there is no proper maintenance and facility, devotees presently have the holy bath in the sea.
Legend and Stories
On His way to Lanka with Sri Lakshmana to rescue Sita, Lord Sri Rama relaxed here for a while, when Varuna created this spring to quench his thirst. Lord Sri Rama was very happy. Hearing that Lord had come there, Sage Agasthya came there and suggested to worship Sakala Theertham Udavayar the Lord of this ancient place. The sage also said that as Ravana was equipped with powerful boons from Lord Shiva, it was necessary that his opponent should have more powerful blessings from the Lord.
Sri Rama followed the advice of the sage and was gifted with the Darshan of Lord Shiva with Mother Parvathi. Varuna also enjoyed this event. He begged the Lord to stay there and shower His blessings to devotees coming to Him after a dip in the Varuna Theertham.
Lord Shiva appeared here facing west praised as Sakala Theertham Udayavar and Sarva Theertha Easwarar. Mother is praised as Perianayaki. The place is named Theerthanda Thanam for quenching the thirst of Lord Sri Rama.
