Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple

Overview


The Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple is located in Aavoor and isdedicated to God Shiva. This temple is located in the south west direction of Kumbakonam on the Melattur-Thittai Hightwa. This temple is quite famous for the five images of God Bhairava or the Panchabairavar. It is the 21st Shiva Sthalam on the south of the River Cauvery.


About the Temple


Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple

This temple is a Madakovil type. The location is also called as Aswathavanam. The temple also has a different name i.e. Manikudam, this name comes from the beautiful hill peak roof of the main sanctum sanctorum of the temple. According to the Hindu mythology, the God of Wind had brought two hill pices from Kailash, one of them is here and the other one is at Nallur.


It is known that God Brahma, seven great sages, Ganas, devas, Iyakkas, Gandharvas, the nine planets, sun, God Indra, God Vishnu and the emperor Dashratha had worshipped to God Shiva at this temple and had received his blessings.


About the Deity


Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple

The chief deity of this temple is God Pasupatheeswarar and He is in the swayambhu shivlingam form. The five Bhairavas in this temple are in the standing form and are worshipping God Shiva. For this reason, the temple is caleed as Pancha Bhairava Thalam too.


Legend and Stories


Goddess Parvathi once came to earth and had chosen this place to perform her penance. All the celestial Gods came here in the form of plants in order to worship the Goddess. At that time this place was nothing but a big jungle. God Shiva was very much pleased with Goddess Parvathi’s penance and he appeared before her as a result with his long hair. Since then he was named as Kavardesswarar.

The major festivals that are celebrated in this temple include Shivarathri, Annabishekam and Thiruvadhirai.


Significance


Devotees come here and pray to God to get rid of marriage obstacles and excellence in academics. When their wishes are fulfilled, the devotees offer abhishekam and clothing to the God. They also feed in order to get blessed.


People pray here for removal of obstacles in marriage alliances and progress in educational qualificationsBlessed by the Lord responding to their prayers, devotees perform abishek and offer Vastras (clothing) and also do feeding (Annadhanam).
