Overview
Siva Subramaniyan Swami Temple is (also known as Senkunda Kottam Temple) Senkunda Kottam is one of the famous Murugan temples in Chennai. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva, in Saidapet, Chennai. The Murugan temple of Saidapet is also called as Senkunda Kottam. Senkunda Kottam aka Saidapet Murugan temple is located hardly 500 meters from Saidapet sub-urban railway station. It is located very near Karaneeswarar temple.
About The Temple
Senkunda Kottam temple has two temple towers which are visible from the road- one big tower for the main temple, and the small adjacent tower for Lord Ganesha's shrine. Lord Ganesha is named as Senkuda Ganapati. On the left side of the temple are small shrines of saints Kumaragurudasa Swamigal, Ramalingar, and Chidambara Swamigal. There is a separate shrine for Angaragan. There are also small shrines for Arunagiri Nathar, Ayyappa, Idumban, Kadamban, Surya, and Palani. There is a peacock idol in front of the main shrine.
Inside the main shrine, the sanctum of main deity Siva Subramanya is located. Siva Subramanya aka Muruagan is in standing posture and found along with his consorts Valli and Deivayanai (Devasena). The entrance of the sanctum has the idols of Ganesha and Murugan on either sides. The wall surrounding the sanctum has the idols of Ganesha, Skanda Guru, Muruga, Vishnu, Durga, and Chandikeswara. The small corridor (prakara) which is present inside the main shrine also houses the shrines of utsav (metal) idols of Nataraj and Sivakami, Utsav Singaravelan, Utsav Shanmukha along with Valli and Devasena, Utsav Nalvar, Pradosa Nayagar, and Utsav Arunagiri. The utsav idol of Arunagiri is lively. An elephant idol is in front of Muruga's sanctum. The small corridor also houses two separate shrines for Nalvar, Ganesha, Valli and Devasena.
The outer corridor (prakara) has the idols and small shrines for various gods and goddesses such as Shaneeswara, Hanuman, three Devis - Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvati, Navagraha, and Nagaraja. There is a separate shrine for Viswanathar and Vishalakshi. Viswanathar is found in the form of Shiv linga. Behind the Shiv Linga, the idols of Shiva and Parvati are also found. There is a small prakara surrounding Viswanathar shrine, which has the idols of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Durga, Brahma, and Chandikeswara.
There is another shrine dedicated to Shanmukha (the six faced Murugan) along with his consorts Valli and Devasena. The prakara surrounding the shrine has small idols of Ganesha, Skanda Guru, Muruga, Vishnu, Durga, and Chandikeswara.
It is not known who built this temple. However, it seems that the temple is 400 years old and it is one of the most important temples in Saidapet area. Apart from Thiruporur, Kanda Kottam, and Vadapalani temple, this temple is also one of the most important Murugan temples located in Chennai city. Even though this temple is not huge, there are a lot of idols and small shrines are found in this temple.
