Overview
Sri Rajagopalar Temple is situated in Manimangalam which is in Kachipuram region. Manimangalam is 20 km toward the east of Sriperumbudur. It finds a spot in the historical backdrop of Tamil Nadu as the spot where Narasimha Varma Pallava crushed the Chalukyas in the seventh century A.D. This reality is said in the copper plates found at Kooram. Kalki has expounded on the Manimangalam fight in his book 'Sivagamiyin Sabatham'. He depicts how Mahendra Varma Pallava was harmed in the fight at Manimangalam, and how his child Narasimha Varma Pallava and his trusted lieutenant Paranjoti vanquished Pulikesin's armed force.
About the Temple
The sanctuary is around 12kms from Tambaram on the Mudichur road and around 5kms from Vandalur on the Sriperambudur road way. The sanctuary is 1000 years old, spread on 1 ½ acres of land of area built amid the chola period.
The directing god at this old sanctuary is Sri Rajagopala, who is found in a standing stance confronting east, with His consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. There is a different sannidhi for Senkamalavalli Thayar. An eccentricity of the god here is that He holds the conch in His right hand and the Sudarsana Chakram in His left hand. His lower right hand is in the Abhaya Hasta mudra and He holds the mace in His lower left hand.
The engravings on the divider outside the principle sannidhi have been painted over. There is a little cutting of Yoga Narasimha, about the extent of one's palm, on the highest point of the external mass of the sanctum sanctorum. Tirumanjanams are performed for this Yoga Narasimha.
Indeed, the pushkarini of the sanctuary is sometimes very dry. There are no vahanams in the sanctuary with the exception of the Garuda vahanam. There are two columns outside the Rajagopala sanctuary with carvings of snakes.
