The Nalla Mariamman Temple is located in Thozhudur and is dedicated to Nalla Mariamman. It is believed that Sage Jamadagni and his wife Renukadevi lived in the region of in Thozhudur. Renukadevi, with the power of her chastity, would fill water in pots made from sand. Once she saw the reflection of a handsome Gandharva traveling on his horse across the sky and wondered at his beauty. The very thought affected her power and her pots broke, forcing her to return to the Ashram empty - handed. Sage Jamadagni understood the reason and asked his son Parasurama to cut off her head. Parasurama did so with great pain. Pleased with his obedience, the sage offered him a boon. Parasurama asked for his mother's life back and the sage agreed but decided to leave his wife. He said that she would continue the service of offering pure water to the people in the name Mariamman (Mari in Tamil meaning water). She is considered the deity to the people from the potters' community in Thozhudur.
