Overview
The deity of God Hanuman is worshipped at the holy Kalyana Anjaneya Temple which is located at Thailvaram village in Guduvancheri. God Hanuman is known as God Anjaneya at this temple and a great devotee of God Rama. The deity of Goddess Suvarchala Devi is also enshrined in the temple.
About the deity
This sacred temple is known to be the only one where the deity of God Hanuman is enshrined along with his consort Goddess Suvarchala Devi. Goddess Suvarchala was the daughter of God Surya, who was also God Hanuman’s teacher. According to the temple authorities, Goddess Suvarchala was God Hanuman’s wife as referred in the Parasura Samhita.
About the Temple
The temple’s structure is quiet small and God Hanuman’s deity is about 8feet tall with four hands. There is a huge bell installed in the temple which is about 32 feet long and at the top portion, there is a flag with a mast. The top portion of the bell is about 18feet which is related to the 18 chapters of the holy book ‘Bhagavad Gita’. This bell is known to the devotees as Ghanta Sthamba and is believed that it functioned as a Sannidhi for God Rama and his consorts God Lakshmana and Goddess Sita. The Moola Vigraham is made of Rosewood but it is not visible to the visitors. The four small deities of God Anjaneta with folded hands are kept at the base of the bell. This bell represents Swami Desika and Vaishnva Acharya.
Legends and Stories
According to a legend, once there was a Brahmin named Dhvajadatta who was well versed in sacred lores and Vedas but was very poor. He was in search of divine help and came across Rishi Pushkara who was a devotee of God Hanuman. He advised Dhvajadatta to start worshipping God Hanuman and speak the 12-syllable prayer of Suvarchala Hanumath Dvadashakshara Mantra.
Dhvajadatta took the Rishi’s advice and started reciting the prayer but there were flaws in the way he conducted the prayer. He lacked unquestionable faith which is necessary to conduct spiritual exercises and also didn’t meditate before reciting the prayer. Therefore his prayers were not efficient and he blamed the Rishi for his failure. During this, a tribal man approached Dhvajadatta and asked for a remedy as he was unwell. Dhvajadatta wanted to help the tribal man but warned him not to approach the Rishi. The tribal man, not listening to Dhvajadatta, went to the Rishi who again advised the tribal man to recite the Suvarchala-Hanumath Mantra with unquestionable faith. The tribal man followed the instructions and was cured. Hearing about this incident, Dhvajadatta was surprised and realised his fault. He began worshipping again with utmost faith and soon God Anjaneya and his consort Goddess Suvarchala appeared in front of him to bless him.
