Maa Bhadrakali Temple

Overview


The Bhadrakali Temple is situated on the Jhansa Road town of Thaneasr in the district of Kurukshetra. Bhadrakali is an incarnation of Aadi Shakti.This is one of the 52 Shakti peethas in India.


About the temple


In the recent times, a metal idol of right ankle has been placed in front of Maa Kali's idol that is worshipped by all the devotees. This Shaktipeeth is otherwise also referred as Kalikapeeth, Savitripeeth or Devikoop. The consort of Savitri is called Sthanu. Hence,the city is called Sthaneswar or Thaneshwar.

The presiding deity is Maa Bhadrakali , also called Devi koop.


Legend and stories


Kurukshetra Shakti Peeth has immense importance since ancient times. It is believed that Arjun, Lord Krishna and other pandavas prayed to Maa Kali for their victory in the Mahabharata Yudha. It is said that, when they won the Yudha, they came back here again and offered all their horses to Maa Kali. Since that day, offering terracotta or metal horses is considered auspicious here. History to this place dates back in the time when it is said that the right ankle of Maa Sati fell in this place. Best information about the origin and the formation of this temple, can be taken by local people. Religious books, Purans etc are worth trying to find out the history about the Shakti Peeth.


Festivals


Somvati Amavasya, Makar Sankranti, Deepawali, Ram Navami and Sharad Purnima are important festivals celebrated here. People (Almost every day) offer their offering to the goddess in the form of fruit, milk, homemade sweets etc.

Navratri that falls two times in a year- one in the month of March or April and other in September or October month depending on the Hindu calendar, is the major festival here. Navratri are celebrated over 9 days, with some people not eating any type of food that is derived from the soil for these nine days. Special ceremonies and rituals are carried during these days. Another festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm is the ‘Shivaratri’ and during this day, people fast and pour milk on the Shiv Lingam and offers ‘Bail’ (A type of fruit) to the god idol


Accommodation


If you are looking for either cheap or expensive type of accommodation, then both are available here. Here the rent of each room may vary from Rs 400 to Rs 12000. Also there are several non-payable guest houses or dharmsalas that are run by the various nonprofit organizations. Beware of the touts who promises to give hi-fi deals with cheap rates.


Significance


Here the devotees offer terracotta horse that is a horse made of mud ,to the deity and pray for their wish fulfillment. One can find various horse idols in the center of the mandir verandah facing the lotus in the center. The devotees feel sanctified after coming here and are forced to come again to the shrine as the serenity help the mind to relax.

Direct trains are available to Kurukshetra Railway station directly from Delhi, Ahmedabad, Patna Jaipur, and Lucknow.

Nearest airport are in Delhi and Chandigarh, both international and national flights are available from here.

1. But it is advisable to have taxi or your own mode of transportation when you are coming to Kurukshetra from airport.
2. Rickshaw, Auto Rickshaw and Bus are common mode of transportation inside the city.
3. Take necessary steps to protect yourself from sunburn etc, because in the summer season, temperature shoots up to 40+ degrees in this part of the country.
