Chandramouleshwara Temple

Overview

The Chandramouleshwara temple is a popular Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located in the village of Unkal, which lies in the suburbs of the city Hubli. The temple is quiet ancient and is believed to be almost 900 years old. The temple is said to have been constructed by the rulers of Chalukya dynasty. Some of the inscriptions found in Unkal reveal that the temple dates back to the11th or12th century AD.

About the Temple

The Chandramoulishwara temple’s architecture closely resembles the Architechtural styles of monuments found in Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal. The structures at these places are considered the cradles of ancient South Indian Temple architecture. The temple has two separate shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, each housing a Shiv Linga. The main shrine of Lord Chandramouleshwara has four entrances from all the four directions. The other shrine consists of the Chaturmukha Linga, which is four faced. The temple has pillars built of black granite which are well decorated with sculptures. The image of dancing Ganesha seems to be attractive. The temple walls, pillars and pilasters are beautifully carved. The temple stands as the finest example of the famous Chalukyan architecture.
