Overview

The Chakkulathukavu Devi temple is dedicated to Shakti and is located in Kerala, India. Chakkulathu Kavu is a Hindu temple, dedicated to goddess Durga. The temple is located in Neerattupuram, Thalavady panchayat, Alappuzha District, Kerala and is one of the most popular temples in the state.

About the Temple

The old history of the temple has some perfect associations with the tale of Sumbha and Nishumbha alluded to in the Devi Mahatmyam. The story goes that two demoniac characters called Sumbha and Nishumbha inferred super human powers through thorough reflection of Lord Brahma. They got a shelter that they could be slaughtered just through a fight with lady. Such a condition being practically unthinkable, Sumbha and Nishumbha vanquished Indra and different Devas. They turned into the unchallenged rulers of the three universes. The powerless Devas under needed to escape away and take shield in remote wildernesses. Holy person Narada feeling pity at the hopelessness of the Gods approaches his dad Lord Brahma. Brahma reminds Narada that high points and low points are the law of life and that was what the Gods were encountering. There was just a single way out for this terrible condition of undertaking. Just a single power could reestablish power and flourishing to Gods and that power was none other than the very Goddess. Devas in like manner moved looking for Goddess. Coming close to Himavan, the epic King of the mountains, they began droning effective mantras to pacify the Goddess. They dove into a he guileful tribute of the Goddess who in herself was power, information, imagination, generosity and endowments.

Goddess Parvathy had quite recently landed on the banks of stream Ganga. Echoes of the mantras contacted her. There was a touch of distress and arguing in the hints of Devas. Goddess Parvathy got a handle on the pitiable situation of Devas. There rose another Goddess from inside her as though something leaves a cover. This was the incarnation of Goddess Durga, having taken a celestial frame to safeguard the Devas from the hardships brought on by the asuras. The story comes full circle in a horrible battle between the "Goddess and Asuras under the initiative of Sumba and Nishumbha. The Devas got back the early powers and successes. Sage Narada shows up before them and celebrates them about the invulnerability of goddess Durga. It is trusted that the Goddess living in Chakkulathukavu is a wholesome response of this all-swarming Goddess to be specific Durga.

Festivals

The major festival is Pongal which takes place in the temple during the month of Vrischikam (November/December).This is the time when the glory of the Goddess is at its peak. Lakhs of women devotees gather around the temple as early as even one week before the function. The temple premises will be overcrowded and the devotees arrange places for offering the pongala on both sides of the main streets. The queue usually extends to a surprising length of 20 km. Rice, coconut and jaggery are brought by women devotees along with round earthen pots for cooking. The Chief Priest lights the main hearth from the divine fire inside the sanctum sanctorum. This fire is exchanged from one oven to another.

Panthrandu Noyampu is another festival celebrated at the temple. This is the type of fasting and prayer which qualifies the devotee for eternal blessings of Chakkulathamma. This fasting starts every year from the first day of the Malayalam month of Dhanu till the twelfth. The other festivals are Naree pooja, Thrikkarthaka.
