The celestial sage, Naradha, once told Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Parvathy that there is no equal to Anusuya's chastity even in heaven. These words of Naradha provoked jealousy and anger in the minds of the three Devis. Naradha started a game by giving the three Devis some grains made of iron and asked them to cook them. But none of them could do it while Anusuya did it. He confirmed his claim about the unique chastity of Anasuya through this incident. Pentakarulu is the other name for the cooked gram in Kannada language. This word became Bangalore in course of time. The temple is situated at the site where sage Athri lived with his wife Anusuya.
