About The Temple
Significance of the Yantra : A steadfast believer of Babaji made a number of trips to the mountains of Himalayas to get his darshan. In spite of his earnest trips Babaji did not grant him darshan. The dejected devotee avowed that he would give up his life by jumping from the mountain if he did not get the darshan on a particular day. When Babaji failed to appear before him, he decided to end his life by jumping from the Himalayas. Baba recovered his body, brought him back to life and accepted him as his disciple. This disciple and another of Babaji’schief disciple Annai are consecrated as yantras. Adjacent are the yantras of Babaji and Lord Muruga.
Lord Muruga who graced Babaji : This is a holy place is filled with serenity. In front of Babaji’s sanctum is the ‘Yaaga sala’, Gowrisankar Peetam. Here ‘Yana’ is performed on Babaji’s birth date (Kaarthigai month, Rohini star). Nearby are Babaji’s Feet. In front of the sanctum on the two pillars are depicted the images of the disciples Annai and Kriya Ammaan. Underneath these pillars is the ‘Panchaanga Kriyaa Peetam’. In the front of the sanctum is Vinayagar. When Babaji had visited Kadirkamam, Lord Muruga gace darshan to him. To indicate this, Lord Muruga’s darshan to Babaji is carved as a statue under a banyan tree. Around the vimaanam of Babaji sanctum, images portraying the events of Babaji’s life are engraved.
Avatara (Birth) Festival : In the main sanctum Babaji is seated on the square-shaped ‘Aavudaiyar Peetam’ facing north. With his right hand he shows ‘abhaya’ (Refuge) sign and his left hand on his lap. This is the only place of worship where we can worship Babaji in the form of a statue. Abhishekam is performed to Babaji on every Thursday at 7.00 pm.
Legend and Stories
There lived a couple by the name of Swethanaathier and Jnanambika in Parankippettai. Swethanathier made his living as a priest in the Muthukumaraswamy temple close by. A son was born to these couple in the year 203 A.D. on the Rohini star day of the Kaarthigai month. He was given the name ‘Nagarajan’. Even as a young child Nagarajan was pretty intelligent and exhibited extraordinary aptitude in studies. During the later years he came to be known as ‘Babaji’. During the 7th year of Nagarajan, there was a festival in the Murugan temple. It is said that a person who had come to attend the festival took away the boy and left him at Kasi. Here Babaji learned the ‘Yoga Maarga’. He later on went to the Podhigai Mountain and had the darshan of Agasthiyar. The sage told him: “ Bhakta! The Guru wo is going to teach you ‘Yoga Maarga’ is at Kadirkamam (Ceylon)”, and directed him there. Babaji departed to Kadirkamam and in 12 days was taught by Boga Siddhar the ‘Panchanga Kriya’ method. Later on, Babaji went to Himalayas. It is strongly believed that he is even now at Himalayas. Later on, Babaji’s disciple Raamiah erected a temple for Babaji
