Arulmigu Velayuthaswamy Temple

Overview


Thindal is a small hill located in the Erode-Perundurai route, approximately 8 Kms from Erode. There is a strong belief that Erode is always a prosperous town, due to the fact that Lord Thindal Murugan is seen gracing from the Thindal malai facing the direction towards Erode. Lord Muruga here is known by various other names such as Thindalmalai murugan, Velayuthaswamy, Kulanthi velayuthaswamy, Kumara velayuthaswamy, and so on.


About the Temple


The temple has an appealing entrance that is located just by the side of the National highway. The images of Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, ValliTheyvanai, Mayilvakanam, Sivan, Parvathi, Saraswathi, Laxmi are beautifully crafted on the entrance arch. The temple houses the famous Arasamarathu Vinayagar, who is a popular deity in this region. This deity is believed to have been found some 40 years ago. Arasamaram is also one of the sacred trees of the temple. The divine vahana of Lord Vinayaka, the mooshika (mouse) is seen in front of the deity.

On further proceeding, one can also find a shrine dedicated to Sree Siththi Vinayaka. There are also two statues dedicated to the Naga Deva and Devi. The shrine of Sri Velayuthaswamy is located in the Munmandapam (Hall). Devotees have to climb a series of steps to reach the sanctum of Sri Velayutha Swamy. Next is the shrine dedicated to the local guardian deity Idumban, which is situated a few steps over the Munmandapam. This deity is also known by the names Idumbakkumaran and Idumbasan. Sri Maga Ganapathi is regarded as the main deity of the Thindal Malai. This deity is popularly called the Thala Vinayagar.

The Utsava moorties of deities like Vinayagar, Velayuthaswamy, Subramaniyar with Valli and Deivanai are found here. The revered Thannasi cave is located towards the northwest from the Velayuthaswamy temple. During the occasion of Karthigai Deepam, the first pooja of the temple is performed at the Thannasi Cave. The statue of the Naga is also found within the Thannasi cave. The Sinai theertham lies to the northeast of Thindal Malai (hill). Thindal Malai covers a area of about 2.43.5 hectare and is around 60 meters tall.


Festivals


A number of festivals are celebrated at Thindal Malai temples every year. Kandhar Shasti,Thirukkarthigai,Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram are some of the major festivals celebrated here. A number of devotees visit this temple every year to get the divine blessings of the deities here. Pilgrims from the nearby state of Kerala also visit the temple.
