The Arulmigu Gurunathaswamy Thirukoil is located in Puthuppalayam and is dedicated to Arulmigu Gurunathaswamy. According to historical stories, the Pandya king's administrators built this stone temple. This temple is supposed to have been moved from the Pichapuram forest 600 years ago. Therefore, the ancestors of the current priests came from the Chidambaram - Pichapuram region. It is said that the Arcot Nawab wanted women from the priests' families for marriage. The families decided to move and disperse to a safer place. They threw the holy stones they had brought with them into the river. The next day they found the three stones in Santhappan's bag. From then on they called the Males in the family Santhappan and the Women were called Santha.
