Sri Sundareswarar temple is a God Shiva's Temple located at Nangavaram, 20 kilometres away Tiruchirapalli. It is an antiquated temple which dates back to 975-1000 A.D. and is 1000 years old. God Shiva is adorned as God Sundareswarar and is believed to be very powerful and a benevolent protector. The Temple's history or the sthalapuranam goes back to the period of Arinjikai Cholan (Rajaraja Cholan's ancestor), whose girl Varuguna Nangai constructs this outstanding temple. She wedded Maravan Bhoothy of the Errakavel clan.Since she had fabricated the sanctuary for her spouse's prosperity, it was named as `Maravaneeswaram.' Since the temple was built up by Varguna Nangai and also the settlement around the sanctuary, the town came to be known as Nangaikudi, which in due course became to be known as Nangaipuram and Nangavaram. The sthalapuranam likewise gave the other story for the town name Nangavaram — the spot where the God blessed Nangai (woman) with an boon or Varam.
