Sri Mariamman Temple is the most seasoned Hindu temple in Singapore. Inherent 1827, Mariamman Kovil or Kling Road Temple as it was prominently known then was developed for worship by settlers from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India. The temple is devoted to Goddess Mariamman, known for her energy in curing pestilence diseases and illnesses. Found in the heart of Chinatown, the temples fancy tower passageway or gopuram, has been a historic point to eras of Hindu worshippers and Singaporeans much the same. The building of Sri Mariamman Temple was the impulse of Mr Naraina Pillai, an assistant with the British East India Organization in Penang. Mr Pillai is known to have went with Sir Stamford Wagers (Originator of Singapore) on his second visit to the island in 1819. Mr Pillai who set up the first block furnace in Singapore, quickly created himself good to go and was distinguished as a guide of the Indian community.
