Situated about 8 kms from Vijayawada, in Undavalli Village, Undavalli caves stand on the high hills overlooking River Krishna. Undavalli Caves are a typical example of the rock - cut cave architecture of India. The carving and sculptures are one of its kinds. Dating back to 4th or 5th century, these caves have four storeys and are related to the Vishnukundin Kings during 420 to 620 AD. On the walls of the caves you can see carved structures of Gods and goddesses. These caves are also associated with the Buddhist era and were supposed to be home to many Buddhist Viharas as seen from some of the architecture here. The prime attraction of this cave is the huge statue of Lord Vishnu (about 5mts long) made of single block of granite stone in a reclining on a serpent conch. There is also a statue of Narada (sage of Gods) and Thumbura on the third floor. But the magnificence of Lord Vishnu s statue in reclining posture out stands them all and leaves one amazing at its beauty. These caves have shrines that are dedicated to Lord Anantapadmanabh Swami and Lord Narasimha Swami. Some small shrines dedicated to "Trimurti' - Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara also adorn this place. For every visitor, Undavalli Caves gives an everlasting experience to creep back into the history. Though Undavalli caves are located in Undavalli village of Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, but it is close to Vijayawada city. From Vijayawada Undavalli caves are about 8 kms from the RTC Bus stand. They are situated 22 kms north - west of Guntur city. Distance from Hyderabad to Undavalli caves is about 280 kms. There are frequent buses to Vijayawada from where you can hire the local transport to reach the caves.
