Kapila Maha Muni installed the idol of Somalingeswara Swamy and thus the name - Kapilakonda. Formerly fishermen used to live in those places and they called it Apilakonda which is gradually became Appikonda. Appikonda Temple is a highly revered shrine in Visakhapatnam District. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity here. The temple contains inscriptions dating back to 12th Century AD, which state that the village was granted by the commander - in - chief of the Chodas.The shrine contains a life - size image of colossal Nandi carved out of a single black stone which is a major attraction for the tourists.
