Bruddha Samalei Temple is situated at Sonpur in Orissa. It is dedicated to Goddess Samalei, a tutelary deity of Chauhans. This tribal deity does not match any of the Hindu deities ichnographically. As the goddess is enshrined here from an ancient time, she is given the name of Bruddha Samalei. Samalei Temple is said to have been built by Balaram Deva. It is the earliest of three temples of its kind, including the temples at Barpali and Patnagarh. Initially worshipped in a thatched house, the present structure of this temple is the creation of Maharaja Prataprudra Deva.
