Bijapur (also called as Vijapura in Kannada) was first settled by Chalukya dynasty of Kalyani in 11th century. They called it as Vijayapura, the "City of Victory". Shri Shiddeshwar temple is situated in the centre of Bijapur city. This temple is dedicated to Lord Siddeshwara (Lord Shiva). This temple attracts thousands of devotees. During Makara Sankranti, a fair is organised at the temple.
