Overview
The Bhadrakali Temple is a renowned Hindu shrine located at Gokarna town. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Uma Devi, the consort of Lord Shiva. Goddess Badrakali is believed to be protector of Gokarna. The architectural design of this shrine resembles the ones found in South Indian temples.
Legend And stories
According to legends, the demon king Ravana is said to have performed penance on Mount Kailash, praying Lord Siva to grant him with two boons. One was to get the Atmalinga and the other one that he should be blessed with a beautiful wife. Lord Shiva is said to have granted his wishes and thus Ravana was returning home with Goddess Uma, the most beautiful woman in universe. Lord Vishnu purposefully stopped him at Gokarna and tricked him into abandoning Goddess Uma at the same place. Lord Vishnu is said to have requested Goddess Uma to reside at Gokarna . Thus she came to be worshipped as Goddess Bhadrakali.

Railways
The Gokarna Road station is the closest railway station which is 8Kms away from Gokarna. Gokarna is accessible by rail from places like Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Mangalore and Madgaon. Kumta and Ankola are the major railway junctions located 35 kms and 20 kms away respectively.
Road
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation operates buses (Red colored KSRTC buses) from nearby towns like Karwar, Ankola and Kumta to Gokarna. Private cabs can also be rented to reach the temple.
