Overview
Puraana Hanuman Temple is situated at Alighanj locality in Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh. This temple is now called new Hanuman Temple of Alighanj in Lucknow. A stunning large water pond with stairs in the compound of the temple adds to its relic.
About The Temple
This temple was built by Begum Rabiya. It is said that she dreamt of a grand statue of Hanuman lying near Islambari garden. After she was blessed with a child, the Nawab immediately started digging that place and he found a statue of Hanuman there. Nawab ordered the statue be established in a temple near Bara Imambara. While the statue was being taken, the elephant carrying it stopped and sat down in Alighanj. A number of efforts to move the elephant became futile. On the advice of a saint, Begum ordered to keep the Hanuman at the same place. This is how this temple came at this place.
Legend and Stories
A Marwari trader had come with lot of saffron and deer musk to Lakshmanpuri for business. He had a peaceful vision of Hanuman and offered his prayers. The trader pleaded with the Lord so that he will be able to sell his goods and go back to Marwar. He retired to the nearby inn for the night. For long distance, the pleasant winds started blowing and the fragrance of the saffron and deer musk stored by him travelled along the mild wind. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and his Begum were on their evening stroll, and found the fragrance of the deer musk to be irresistible. Immediately the deputy was summoned and asked to find out from where the fragrance is coming. It was traced to the inn. He was produced before the Begum and Nawab. The Begum had bought all the saffron and deer musk the trader had for a good price. He again went to the Lord and offered his prayers.
