Overview
The Trisala Bhagavathy temple situated 500 meters east of Mankave junction, is in the central part of the Padinjare Covilakam. The temple was built in the 19th century by the then Zamorin popularly known as Karyasthan Thampuran. It is dedicated to goddess Bala Durga. Devi is worshipped as a small girl playing with a ball in one hand. It is believed that Trisala Bhagavathy is the younger sister of Shree Valayanadu Devi.
About The Temple
The temple has an area of 2.5 acres. The structures in this temple are Shreekovil, Namaskara Mandabam, Chuttambalam, Nata-pandal, Gopuram, Bhagavathy Kettu, office building, a small auditorium and a tank. The square Shreekovil faces east. The idol of the Bala Durga is made up of Krishna Sila (black stone) of height 37 cm with four arms, two hands having a conch and a disc while the other two show Abhaya and Varada mudras (gestures with hand). There is no other idol in the temple complex.
The walls of the Shreekovil are painted with several murals. On the eastern side there are figures of Dwarapalakas (gate keepers) standing on serpents, with sword and trident in hands. On the southern side are Lord Dakshinamoorthy (in meditating pose) and Ganapathy. The painting on the western side shows the goddess with eight arms and weapons in hand, along with Lord Narasimma with Lord Brahma and other Devas with folded hands. On the northern side are Sri Rama and Lakshmana with bows and arrows and Lord Krishna.
Legend and Stories
Elderly people of the locality believe that there was an ancient temple of Bala Durga which was demolished at the time of the Mysore invasion of Malabar. At the time of clearing of the trees, the hatchet of one of the labourers had touched a stone and blood oozed from it. Seeing this, the matter was reported to the Raja. It was revealed that it was the idol of Bala Durga. A temple was built on the spot and worship began.
Festivals
Annual festival is held in Vrichikam. Other important festivals are Ashtami Rohini, Navaratri, Maha Shivarathri, and Palum Vellari.
Pujas
Three pujas, namely, Usha puja, Ucha puja, and Athazha puja are performed daily.
Significance
One of the most popular offerings is the ‘Alankara Puja’, offered by young girls of marriageable age. This puja for the Bhagavathy is to overcome all obstacles in life and achieve fulfilment of desires. Alankara puja is performed for Bhagavathy and Shree Krishna on all days except the annual festival.

Timings
The temple remains open from 5.30 AM to 8.30 AM in the morning and from 5.30 PM to 7.30 PM in the evening.
