Overview
Pundarikapuram is a small temple atop a little rise called Midaikunnam near Talayolaparambu in Kottayam. Talayolaparambu is a village-town situated in the northern part of Kottayam district in Kerala, South India. Belonging to the Vaikom legislative assembly and Kottayam parliament constituency, it is one of the chief towns situated on the Ernakulum-Kottayam route.
About The Temple
A tiled and saddle roofed square “Chuttambalam” encloses a square sanctum sanctorum. Next to the square enclosure is a small ‘balikkalpura’. The idol worshipped here is that of Vishnu sitting astride his celestial vehicle Garuda together with Bhoodevi. This is a rare icon. The murals in the temple were painted during the latter half of the 18th century. Thousands of Nagaraj images are installed here with Garuda.
About The Deity
There’s a fine picture of Shiva and Parvati sitting beneath the Kalpavriksh, a powerful picture of Durga vanquishing the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasur, the pranks of Krishna, a picture of Yakshi the dangerous seductress of legends, Rama Pattabhishekham or the coronation of Sri Rama, Shiva Thandav and a picture of Sastha astride a horse among a few of the striking paintings at Pundarikapuram.
