Legend and Stories
There are several stories associated to the temple and its deities. The legend associated to Goddess Bhagavathi is related to how Kaali became Gauri. However, both the Goddesses are the incarnations or forms of Goddess Parvati Devi. According to legend, Lord Shiva repeatedly addressed Goddess Parvati as Kali. The angry Goddess retorted that she would return only after getting a fair complexion and left. She reached Madhya Adavi and performed penance. Pleased, Lord Brahma granted the complexion she wished. The history of the Urpazhachi is that Lord Vishnu once laughed at his consort which made the Goddess angry. She cursed the Lord that he would lose his head. After all the Devas pleaded for a long time, she agreed to give his head back on a condition that Goddess Kaali’s wish has to be granted by Lord Brahma. Hence, Lord Vishnu got his head back.
