Shree Mahalaxmi Temple

Overview

This Temple is located in the city of Panjim, off Dada Vaidya road at the Altino foothill. The deity of the temple originally came from the village of Taleigaon and was moved to Bicholim in the 16th century to escape Portuguese destruction.

About The Deity

The deity is Goddess Mahalaxmi (the Hindu Goddess of Wealth). The idol is made of black stone, with four hands and is placed in a silver canopy. This is the peaceful form of Devi.

Legends and Stories

The Havig Brahmins from Karwar-Kumtha area who lived on charity worshipped the Goddess Mahalaxmi and wherever they went they carried this deity along. In the 16th century, they moved to Goa along with this deity and reached Taleigaon village of which Panjim was then a mere ward, along the river Gomati. The Havig Brahmins whose whole day was spent begging for alms had sought shelter in the precinct of the Vetal temple. But, fearing desecration of their idol made of marble, they moved away from Taleigaon to Panjim.

The original idol today lies in a small box in the rear wall of the temple which faces the present day main deity of Goddess Mahalaxmi. The magnificent sabhamandap (hall) of the temple has been added later. The Sabhamandap (hall) was then rebuilt in 1983.

Festivals

A lot of devotees come to the Mahalaxmi temple during Hindu festivals like Dusshera and Mahashivaratri. The main festivals celebrated here are Navratri and Chaitra Poornima. In February also a big fair is held during the Maruthi Zatra festival that draws a large number of devotees.
