Legend and Stories
According to the history specialists including Dr P Gururaja Bhat Inna Muddannu Temple have a history of almost 700 years. It was developed after Yellur Mahothobhara Vishwanatha Temple, which has got a history of around 800 years. It is said that as the southern bit of Yellur sanctuary was in the Inna town limit of Mundkur Maagane and as a settlement Kunthala(Kuthyaru) Raja permitted the Astakula Brahmins to have their Eshwara sanctuary in Inna as Mundkur had Sri Durga Temple which was more seasoned than 700 years preceding Yellur Temple.
There were eight Brahmin families of Bhargava Gothra situated in Mundkur Maagane. Inna goes under Mundkur Maagane.Even today there are many places named after these Brahmins and can be seen in Mundkur Maagane extraordinarily encompassing Inna Village. Just For these Brahmins of Byhargava Gothra -Kachithaya,Kunjithaya,Vailaya, Mallanjinayaka, Mugeraya,Madmannaya,Okuda, and Mithinthaya ,Inna Mahalingeshwara is a Grama Devatha and not Kula Devatha. Goddess Sri Durgaparameshwari is the Kuladevatha for all brahmins hailing from Bhargava Gothra. Indeed, even Vidwan Inna Krishnachar and Yellur Keshava Bhat have said this. Even in the Suprabhatha composed and committed to Inna Muddannu Mahalingeshwara by Inna Krishnachar this issue has been communicated saying Muddannu Mahalingeshwara has possessed the spot where Durgaparameshwari sanctuary is situated in Mundkur Magane (Stanza 28) taking into account the supplication to God from the Brahmins of Astakula Brahmins. Local people are misdirecting aficionados saying they need to visit Muddannu before going by Mundkur . Not the slightest bit Inna Muddannu Mahalingeshwara sanctuary is joined with Other Bhargava Gothra brahmins aside from the eight families specified above and it is the misguided judgment made in the psyches of aficionados of Bhargava Gothra.
As per the legend of the spot, the considerable sage Bhargava performed atonement of Lord Shiva at a close-by slope. Satisfied with the retribution, Shiva favored Bhargava and did a help that he would descend and stay as a Linga close-by. That is the way the Inna temple started to exist. Indeed, even today, Inna Mahalingeshwara (alongside Sri Durga Parameshwari of adjacent Mundkur, likewise settled by Sage Bhargava) is the Kula Devata for a larger part of families from the Bhargava Gotra in Tulu Nadu.
This spot has a written and recorded history of more than 1300 years. The garbha gudi and theertha mantapa of the temple are assembled in run of the mill Dakshina Kannada sanctuary style. The fundamental Bhuta loved in the sanctuary is Varahi (Panjurli). The sanctuary was as of late revamped in 2006 and is in great condition.
