According to sthala puranam, a pot (Kalasa) containing all lives was kept at this place during the great destruction (Pralayam) and hence this place is known as Kalayanallur. This is also the place where the Lord was pleased with Ambica's penance and married her. Other deities that are present in this temple are Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lord Lingodhbava (made out of an emerald stone), Lord Arthanareeswara (His right leg in a relaxed posture) and Ambica (Who stands facing the Lord).
