The Aranganathar Temple is located in Srirangam and is dedicated to God Aranganathar. The presiding deity of this temple God Ranganatha is said to have appeared from the Milk Ocean. God Brahma worshipped him for a long time and appointed the Sun to continue the worship according to Vedic rules. Later, God Rama began to perform the worship. As a mark of his affection for Vibhishana, God Rama gifted his Ranganatha idol to Vibhishana. While returning to Ayodhya from Lanka, Vibhishana set the idol down for a break but couldn't move the idol later on. This was Perumal's way of expressing his desire to stay in that spot. He assured Vibhishana that in the south he would be in his reclining form facing Lanka. The then king of the region Dharma Chola built the temple. That temple eventually disintegrated. The current temple was then constructed by Killi Valavan of the Chola dynasty. The temple is spread across 100 acres of land and has exceptional sculptures. There are 21 towers in the temple. The Rajagopuram in this temple is the tallest in the country. There are 8 holy springs including Suryapushkarani and Chandrapushkarani.
