Arulmighu Nachiar Temple

Overview


The Arulmigu Nachiar Temple is located at Sirivilliputhur and is dedicated to God Vishnu. It is one of the 108 Divya desams of God Vishnu. The chief deity in this temple is Goddess Amba who is in the form of Andal.


About The Temple


This temple is divided into two parts. One of them is called Vadabadra Sayanar Temple and the second one is called Andal Sannathi. The first part is known to have been constructed by a King called Villi who was the ruler of this place. The tall tower which can be seen in the temple was built by Periya Alwar who took the help of the Pandiya king Vallabadevan. The Andal Sannathi was constructed by the kings of the Pandiyan Dynasty at varied times. On the roof of this Sannathi, people can still see the fish emblem which is the symbol of Pandiya kings. The rajagopuram of this temple is one of the tallest in the entire state of Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, it is also the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government. The gopuram has 11 tiers. The renowned peot Kamban has praised this in his poems in a grandiose style. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there is an image of God Vishnu who is in the reclining posture. The consorts of God can be seen attending to him at his feet. Both the sages Bhrigu and Markandeya can also be seen near his feet and head. During torrential floods, God had taken rest on the leaf of the banyan tree. It can be seen behind Sage Bhrigu.

The chief deity of this temple is Goddess Amba in the form of Andal.


Legend and Stories


This place is full of history. This temple is dedicated to Andal who is the only female Alvar out of the 12 Alvar saints of the Southern Indai. She is known for her works of Thiruppavasi and Nachiar Tirumozhi. Andal is famous for her great devotion towards God Vishnu. She was adopted by Periyalvar. She avoided marrying a person from earthy. She is treated more than just a saint and she is prayed to as a form of God herself. When the reign of Thirumalai Naikar and Rani Mangammal was going on in the mid-17th century and the late 17th century respectively. This place had become very popular. Thirumalai Nayak renovated all the temples of this city including this one.

The temple pujas take place 6 times a day. They are Ushathkalam (7 a.m.), Kalasanthi (8 a.m.), Uchikalam (12 p.m.), Sayarakshai (6 p.m.), Irandamkalam (7 p.m.) and Ardha Jamam (10 p.m.)

Significance


Devotees come here for boon in child, marriage, education, wisdom, business development etc. Devotees offer butter to God and also clothes, lamps, flowers, Tulsi etc. Feeding is a common practice in this temple.
