Overview
Sree Ayyappa Temple is located at Bakthavatchalapuram near Avadi bus depot and railway station. Lord Ayyappa is the presiding deity of this temple.
History of The Temple
This temple came in to existence in a small shed and today it has grown roots and turned into a place of worship for 1000’s of Ayyappa Bhakthas in and around Avadi, Chennai.
It was group of Keralites working in a Central defence establishment who started the Pooja Sangh way back in the year 1966. They used to render bhajans before a portrait of Ayyappa Swamy. The Ayyappan Vilakku pooja soon followed suit and has, since then, been an annual event. Sustained yet selfless efforts of devotees resulted in the registration of the Hari Hara Sutha Seva Sangham in the year 1968. The Shadadhara pratishta was performed by the Chief Priest of the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, Brahma Sree Thanthri Neelakantaru, on February 22nd 1988.
Since then poojas and rituals at the temple are being performed in accordance with the traditional customs adopted by the Sabarimala shrine. Thousands of devotees throng the temple during the Mandalam period. The temple provides those undertaking pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine with the sacred Irumudi Kettu. The Avadi Municipality, in a mark of respect to the deity and noble efforts of the temple trust, has named the street leading to the temple Bhaktavalsapuram
