Legend and Stories
As per a legend, once upon a time Purusottama Deva appeared in Kanchi City as per the request of King of Puri named Kanchi Avijana. The King was delighted to see him and hence offered his daughter’s hand for marriage. Purusottama Deva accepted the offer and decided to marry the princess.
During the Rath Yatra, Kanchi Avijana raged a war as he felt insulted after watching Purusottama Deva sweeping. As God Balabhadra and God Jagannath saw their devotee in trouble, they disguised as soldiers and went to Kanchi to help the King. While they were on the way, the gods met a milkmaid named Manika and asked her to give the King a ruby ring. The ring was given by the Gods and she was told that she’d be praised for her help.
The milkmaid met the King and gave him the ring. The King was pleased by her help and understood the divine play of the Gods. He then gifted a whole village to the milkmaid and then the village came to be known as Manikapatna.
