Overview
The Shri Bhagavati temple is a well known Hindu shrine located in Pernem, Goa. This ancient temple situated at North Goa is about 28 kms from the state capital Panaji. The temple is believed to be more than 500 years old and is situated on the main road.
About the deity
The presiding deity of this temple is Goddess Bhagwati who graces here in the Ashtabhuja form (eight hands). The standing vigraha of Goddess Bhagwati is placed over a high pedestal. The entrance of this temple has magnificent life size statues of two standing elephants, one on either side. These huge black stone elephant statues are seen welcoming the visitors.
About The Temple
Goa was once ruled by the Portuguese and this had an adverse effect on many Hindu temples of that region during their rule. The foreign rulers had in fact demolished and destructed many Hindu shrines of that region, in order to diminish the glory of the religion and to spread their own ideologies and beliefs among the locals. Only a handful of temples survived their wraths and this Bhagwati temple is one of those few temples that stood the test of time.
Festivals
Dussehra is the most important festival that is celebrated here. This festival is one of the main attractions of this place and is celebrated grandly from Ashwin Shuddha Pratipada to Poornima. A huge crowd of devotees, numbering more than 25 thousand are believed to attend this festival celebration.
