Overview
This temple, also known as Somnath of the East, is a beautifully carved and well-designed temple of Bojpur, Madhya Pradesh. The temple is still incomplete, but not incomplete in beauty and magnificence. The Bojeshwar Temple is an ideal example of craftsmanship in the 12th century.
About The Temple
Bojpur is a famous huge heritage active city in Madhya Pradesh state. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva was founded by the Parmar king of Dhar, Raja Bhoj (1010-1053) and was named after him. Bojpur is famous as a heritage site because of its magnificent remains of Shiva Temple and the Cyclopean dam. The temple is a simple square with outside portion of 66 feet. The pillars are massive but they have a remarkable elegance due to their tapering form. From above, the doorway is richly carved and from below it is plain throwing contrast against the two marvellously sculpted figures that stand on either side. The other three sides are balconies supported by big brackets and four pillars.
The linga in the sanctum is 7.5 feet high with a circumference of 17.8 feet. It is set upon a massive platform 21.5 feet square and made of three limestone blocks superimposed on one another. The architectural harmony of linga and platform creates a superb synthesis of lightness and solidity. Because of unknown reasons, the temple was not completed.
