The temple is a real treat for art lovers, more particularly to those who are highly inclined in learning about the rich culture of the Chandela kingdom.
About the Temple
The temple houses a 5 ft high image of God Surya in a standing posture, seen driving a chariot of seven horses. The temple is quite ancient, dating back to the 11th century AD. The lintel of the ornate doorway depicts three similar but smaller figures of God Surya as depicted in the main sanctum. Very few temples in India are dedicated to Lord Surya and this is one among them. The Sun God is seen driving his chariot, drawn by the seven horses, each horse representing each day of the week. A eleven headed Ashtabuja idol of Lord Vishnu is present at the southern niche. A rather peculiar three-headed ashtabhuja Surya idol adorns the western niche. The temple features a series of images of the divine couples depicted in the following order, namely Brahma-Brahmani, Siva-Parvati, Lakshmi-Narayana and Bhairava-Bhairavi.
Festivals
Annual Dance performances are staged in an open-air auditorium, just in front of the Chithragupta temple and the Vishvanatha Temple. These programmes are conducted every year in the month of February starting from the 20th and end on 26th.
