Overview


The Chowalloor Shiva Temple is a popular shrine situated at the Chowalloor locality of Guruvayur. Guruvayur is a busy town in the Thrissur district of Kerala, India. The temple is quite ancient and is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva.


About the Temple


The Chowalloor Shiva Temple is one of the prominent Shiva temples of Kerala. It is one among the 108 ‘Shivalayas’ consercated by Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Accordin to Legends, Parasurama is the founder of Kerala. This temple also houses a beautiful image of Sri Thiruvambadi Krishna at its entrance.


About The Deity


The chief deity Lord Shiva, is seen gracing from this shrine facing the direction west, while Goddess Parvati devi faces the east. The deities are positioned in such a way that their divine gaze falls on people in all directions.

Maha Shivaratri is the major festival celebrated in this shrine.

Road

The Chowallur Shiva shrine is situated on the Guruvayur - Choondal Road. One has to take the Guruvayur - Choondal road from the Guruvayoor Ring road. A number of autos and taxis are available to reach the temple.
