Overview
The Shri Devki Krishna Bhumika Mallinath temple is situated in the Chorao Island. The small town of Marcel is the location of the temples of more than 15 deities of the Hindu pantheon. Marcel lies 17 km from Panaji in Ponda taluka about 3-km away from Banastari Bridge on the Panaji-Ponda road.
About The Temple
The original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese. The people of Chorao smuggled the main deity of Devaki-krishna with some associated deities via Mayem to Naroa and Marcela where they are now held. The structural design of the temple is very simple and appealing to the eyes. In March the temple celebrates the installation of the idol where devotees gather for the community meal which is held on until late in the evening. The island can be visited by taking a ferry from Ribandar which is on the road to Old Goa at around 3 km from Panaji.
About The Deity
The main deities Devakikrishna and affiliate deities of Bhumika Devi, Laxmi Ravalnath, Mallinath, Katyayani, Chodaneshwar and Dhada Shankar were originally located at Choodamani island (Chorao island of today). The Garbha Griha (inner sanctum) of the temple has the beautiful idol of Devaki and Lord Krishna. The idol of Devaki is in standing posture with a child Krishna, between her legs.
Festivals
The palakhi is taken in Shukla and Trayodashi (except in Chaturmas). Ramanavmi, Gokulastami are celebrated, on a grand scale. The major festival is Malni Purnima from Paush Vadya which is celebrated over here with great fervour and excitement.
Accessibility
Dabolim Airport is located 29 km south of Panaji. Domestic flights operate between Dabolim and major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Kochi, Delhi, Chennai and Thiruvananthpuram. Panaji railway station is part of the Konkan Railway network. Trains run between Panaji and prominent cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and New Delhi. The Vasco Da Gama railway station is 30 km away from Panaji. Buses of state transport corporations of Goa and the neighboring states ply from the Kadamba bus stand, Panaji's main bus terminal.
