Overview
Haridhwar was once known as Gangadhwara. The five sacred bathing spots in Haridhwar are Gangadhwara, Kankal, Nila Parvatha, Bilwa Theerta and Kusavartha. The main ghat at Haridhwar is known as Hari ki Pairi (a footprint of Vishnu). Nearby is the Gangadhwara temple, the most important of the several temples that dot this town.
The Ganga Aarthi which is done at seven each night is a spectacular sight, when the aarthi ceremony is performed at all temples in Haridhwar at the same time. Hundreds throng to the ghats at Hari ki Pairi to participate. Offerings of lamps and flowers are made to the river and it is a marvellous sight to watch hundreds of miniature lamps float across the river.
