Overview
The Kailasanathar Temple is located at the Perumal Koil Street of Madhavaram, Chennai. The temple is situated about a kilometre from the Madhavaram Bus Depot.
About The Temple
The Kailasanathar temple is an ancient temple at Madhavaram which is getting renovated now. The temple’s main entrance is closed temporarily owing to the on going painting works on the Rajagopuram (Temple tower). The temple is basically small in size yet has a large courtyard surrounding it. The sanctum sanctorum of Lord Kailasanathar is found in the main precinct and faces the direction for east. Devi Karpagambal graces here from a separate shrine facing the south. The vigraha of the goddess is a small 3 feet statue and is elegantly decorated. Religious rituals such as poojas and abhishekas are performed on the deity everyday. Exclusive sannidhis for the Jyotirlingams, mahalakshmi and murugan are also present within the temple. The northern part of the temple also houses a Hanuman sannidhi.
About The Deity
The chief deity of this temple is Lord Shiva gracing here as Lord Kailasanathar and the Divine Mother Shakti as Karpagambal.
Legend and Stories
Historical inscriptions reveal that this temple had been built by the Pallavas in 610 AD. It is said that Pujas for the deities’ weren’t performed for more than 50 years. A person from the caretaking family is said to have initiated the rebuilding of this built the temple, replacing the old idols with new ones. The Shivalinga inside the main Sanctum is about 5 feet tall and is praised as a Maragatha linga. The Shivalinga looks appealing and majestic.
