Overview
The Kariya Manikka Perumal Temple is hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is located at Cheyyur, a town in the Kanchipuram district of Tamilnadu, India. The temple is quite ancient and is estimated to be at least 800 years old. Cheyyur is one of the ancient villages in the East Coast Road (ECR), stretching from Chennai to Pondicherry (Puducherry).
The Kari Manikka Perumal temple is one of the many shrines located at Cheyyur. Cheyyur was once called Seyyur and also went by the name Jayamkonda Chola Nallur, according to the many inscriptions found at this place. This place was situated in the ancient territorial subdivision known as “Puraiyur Nadu” which was inturn a sub-division of the Sembur Kottam in Jayamkonda Chola Mandalam of ancient Tamil Nadu.
About The Temple
The temple has a small entrance with no gopuram (Tower) and faces the direction east. The sanctum sanctorum of the principal deity also faces east, with a prakaram having a clean and spacious nandavanam to the left of the main entrance. Sri Kari Manikka Perumal appears in the standing position and is accompanied by his consorts, Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi on his either sides.
The deity graces here with chaturbhuja (four hands) and is seen holding the sacred conch (Sankha) and Chakra in his upper hands. The lower right hand is seen blessing the devotees (abhaya hasta) while the lower left hand is rested on his hip (kati hasta). The passage (antarala) connecting the sanctum with the mandapa outside houses the processional image of Kari Manikka Perumal and other deities.
The Garuda sannidhi (sanctum) is found in the outer mandapa and is supported by pillars sculpted with gods like Veera Hanuman and few revered poets. Goddess Lakshmi Devi is worshipped here as Perundevi Thayar. She graces in a separate sanctum sanctorum located on the south-west. On the other side is a shrine dedicated to the renowned Andal nachiyar. Numerous inscriptions are found at the outer walls of the main sanctum sanctorum.

Cheyyur is around 7 kms from ECR, near Ellai Amman Koil in Nainarkuppam. People can also come from Madhuranthakam, a town in Kancheepuram district. Private cabs and regular bus services are available from Chennai and Chengapattu. The Government of India has proposed to develop a 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Plant (UMPP) at Cheyyur.
