Overview
Karuppanasamy Temple is located in Poyyerikarai at Erode district. This temple is 500 years old.
About the deity
The deity of God Karuppannsamy is worshipped at the holy Karuppanasamy Temple. This deity depicts the heroic nature of God Karuppannasamy while the other Kannimar deities depict calmness. The structure of the temple is unique as the devotee moves clockwise in the temple if he/she arrives from the entrance near the God Muruga’s shrine and exits from the northern entrance.
About the Temple
The deity of God Vinayaka is enshrined between the Neem trees and Bodhi at the north of the temple. The Iron Vel which is known to be the weapon of God Muruga is planted on the other side of the anthill. There is another temple on the southern side, named Puttrumariamman Temple. The two idols of Muniappasamys are enshrined above the two horses while the deities of God Kannimar and God Karupannasamy grace the stage-peeta as they are created out of a single stone.The deity of God Vinayaka is enshrined in the eastern side of the temple and the deity of God Muruga is installed in the middle of green trees.
Legends and Stories
The holy Poyyerikkarai Karupannasamy temple is constructed in a huge area of 1.5 acres. The fort of Erode is about 3000 years old and has been ruled by several Kings. The kings built a lake in the region as well to store water and use it for irrigation purposes. The farmers, to protect the lake constructed this temple. All the locals visited and worshipped the Gods at this temple. They later named the lake Poyyerikkarai and the Neem tree came to be known as Vellai Velamaram.
Festivals
The festival of Pangal is celebrated for two days in the temple during the Aadi month. Water is fetched from the Cauvery River and presented to the deity on the first day of celebration. The celebrations of Pongal are conducted the next day. Thousands of devotees visit during this festival.
