Overview
Sri Mariamman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakth. It is located in the heart of Karur District, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most famous and sacred temple of the city and the second largest Amman temple in Tamil Nadu.
About The Deity
Mariamman is the mother goddess to the whole of South India and is loved and worshipped the most across various villages and towns. Mariamman temple is known as a ‘temple for all’. Irrespective of cast or creed, people flow into the temple to worship Mother Mariamman. The Mother Goddess with all her four hands showers blessings upon her devotees and fills them with grace. People offer abhishekams and archanas and pray to the post in the temple. The festivals of the temple are celebrated at a grand scale accompanied by folk dancing and rituals like fire walking, nose piercing etc.
Festivals
The most important festival of the temple is the 21 day Vaikasi (May-June) festival celebrated in all grandeur. Aadi Friday in July-August, Navarathri in September-October, Deepavalii in October-November, Karthikai in November-December, Pongal falling almost on January 14, Friday in Thai month (January-February), annual consecration ceremony, Panguni Uthiram in March-April are other festivals celebrated in the temple.
Significance
She is known to be the bearer of rains, a healer of communicable diseases and someone who takes care of the family and its welfare. People pray to her for proper rains, good yield of crops, for the well being of the family, fertility, for receiving a good spouse etc.
