Overview
The Khirachora Gopinath temple is situated in Remuna. It is a little town located 9 km east of Balasore, about halfway between Calcutta and Puri. The name "Remuna" is derived from the word "Ramaniya" which means very good looking. It is supposed that Lord Rama carved 'Gopinath' with His arrow and that Goddess Sita worshiped this deity in Chitrakuta. King Langula Narashingha Dev, the king of Orissa, brought this Deity to Remuna in the 13th century from Chitrakuta.
About The Temple
In the Temple compound one can see the foot prints of Lord Shri Chaithanya Mahaprabhu, which are next to the Garuda-stambha (pillar).
The Temple premise also has the Samadhi (tomb) of Shri Rasikanandha Dev, a great devotee of Lord Krishna. The Temple also has a beautiful diorama displaying the pastimes of Lord Krishna.
About The Deity
Shri Khirachora Gopinath is the main deity at the temple. Between 5AM and 7AM, visitors can have a look of the deity while the priest bathes and dresses Gopinath. One can clearly see cows, cowherds, the Asta-sakhis (the eight principle Gopis, friends of Lord Krishna) and other persons carved in the black stone bas-relief idol of Shri Khirachora Gopinath. On Shri Gopinath’s right and left respectively are black stone idols of Shri Govinda and Shri Madana Mohana brought from Vrindavan in 1938 by Baba Chaithanya Das. On the altar, there are also idols of Shri Radha Rasabihari, Lord Jagannath and Mahaprabhu on one side and numerous salagrama silas (fossilised seashell stones) on the other. All Vaishnavites are welcome here for Gopinath’s worship, and the indescribably mouth-watering milk sweet known as amrutha keli, prepared from condensed milk, cream and sugar, with a sprinkling of raisins.
Legend and stories
