Lakshman Temple

Overview


Lakshman Temple is located on the bank of Hemkund Lake (literally means 'lake of snow') which is situated nearly 29 kms from Joshimath, is set in one of the famous beauty spots of the central Himalayas and has a lake of crystal clear water located amidst beautiful surrounding. This temple is dedicated to Lakshman, a brother of Lord Rama. It is believed Lakshman was brought here after he fell unconscious in the war with Ravana.

It is believed that the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Govind Singh meditated on the shores of the Hemkund Lake. He took this penance in order to attain enlightenment. Later on the devotees of the Guru constructed the Sikh Gurudwara on the banks of this auspicious place. This is visited by thousands of devotees every month.


How to Reach Hemkund


Hemkund is 19 km trek from Govindghat. The base for journey to Hemkund is Ghangaria which is 13 km trek from Govindghat. Govindghat is connected with Joshimath on (Delhi-Bardinath highway) with 18 km long motorable road.


How to Reach Chamoli

Airport

The nearest airport for Chamoli is Jolly Grant (221 Kms). Public Transport and Private Cabs are available from airport to Chamoli anytime.


Railways

The nearest rail head is located at Rishikesh (202 Kms). Haridwar may be another choice for those travelers who are planning to arrive by rail.


Road

Chamoli district is well connected by road, with important towns of the Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab state which further connects it with outside world.

Meaning -According to this sloka, God is the isolated and aloof strength of the controlling and virtuous craving in men.
