Madan Mohan Temple

Overview


Madangopal Jiu Temple is a temple in the village of Mellock, near Samta, in West Bengal, India. The temple is locally known as Gopaler Mondir, which literally means the temple of Gopala, that is, Krishna. The temple is terracotta ornamented aatchala (roof with 8 slopes) temple of Radha and Madangopal and was built in the 17th century AD by Mukundaprasad Roychoudhury, a descent of the Roychowdhury Zamindars of Mellock. Then the Rupnarayan River used to flow not far away from the temple, but over the time it changed its course and has now moved further away.


About Temple


In 1651, Mukundaprasad Roychowdhury was built this temple. This temple is located on the bank of the Rupnarayan River. This temple is called as “The Temple of The Respected Lord”. 'Mandangopal' is a combination of two words. 'Madan' means the lord of love and 'Gopal', which means one who plays with the cowherds.

Legend and Stories


According to the history, Both the village and the temple are places near the river Ruonarayan. This temple was destroyed and re-constructed in the year of 2010. But suddenly the work was stopped. In the 17th century, it was rebuilt by Mukundaprasad Roychoudhury.


Festival


Madanmohan Jiu Temple annually celebrates the festival of Holi or Dol Yatra on the Purnima day. On this auspicious day the idol of the Lord is taken to a house in the vicinity of the temple in an ancient wooden palanquin. Rituals are performed keeping in mind the age old heritage of the family and the preserved traditions. As the dusk sets in, the idol is reinstalled in the temple. The festival of Janmashtami i.e. the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna is also celebrated on a grand scale.
