Mallikeswarar Temple is believed to be 700 years old. The temple was once completely buried under the ground and the top of the temple showed up during an excavation. On digging further, the entire temple was discovered. When the temple was uncovered, fresh jasmine flowers were found on the main deity (Lord Shiva) of this temple. Hence, the deity is called Mallikeswarar (the word "Malli" means jasmine in Tamil). Mallikeswarar temple is also referred to as Thoppaswamy temple, as this temple was worshipped by a Siddha named Thoppaswamy. Thoppaswamy lived between 1780 - 1830 AD.
