Overview


Mammiyoor Temple, also known as Mammiyoor Shiva Temple or Mammiyur Mahadeva Kshetram, is situated about 200 meters north-west to the world famous Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur District of Kerala.


About The Temple


The unique feature of Mammiyoor Mahadeva Temple is that the temple enshrines the idol of Lord Vishnu in a sanctum sanctorum, next to that of Lord Shiva. Mammiyur Shiva Temple is the only temple where Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped in equal status. It is believed that the pilgrimage to Guruvayur Temple would be incomplete if the Mammiyur Shiva Temple is not visited.


Legend and Stories


After the departure of Lord Krishna to Vaikunda at the end of His Avtar, His abode Dwaraka was swallowed by the sea. His own Vigraha-idol designed by Himself was floating on the waves. Planet Jupiter and Vayu Bhagwan found the idol and were searching for a place for its installation. They came to Kerala created by sage Parasurama and chose the Bank of Rudra Theertha which was then home of Lord Shiva.


Festivals


Barring two months -Vaikasi (May-June) and Aani (June-July) the temple celebrates various festivals during the remaining 10 month of the year. Lalitha Sahasranama Archana is performed grandly on the Saraswithi puja day during Navarathri in September-October. Children from all parts of the country gather in the temple to participate in the Sangeetharchana event. Aksharabyasa- beginning the schooling of the children also takes place this day. Special pujas are performed in the temple on the Shivrathri day in February-March.


Accessibility


Nedumbassery Airport (Kochi International Airport) is the nearest airport, situated 80 km from Guruvayur town. Guruvayur Railway Station, situated on the east of Guruvayoorappan Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, is the nearest railway station to reach Mammiyoor Temple. Guruvayur is well connected by road network with various places of the country.

Meaning -We worship the fragrant Lord Shiva, who has 3 eyes and who cultivates all beings. May He free me from death, for immortality, as even a cucumber is separated from its bond with the vine.
